Faraday wave instability device for high-concentration droplet generation: Application to aerosol synthesis of drugcontaining nanoparticles
About the project: Recently, a new technology of liquid atomization has been proposed in the literature involving Faraday wave instabilities amplified through Fourier horns. The advantage of this technology lies in the optimization of power and improved control of particle sizes when compared to existing ultrasonic nebulization devices. The application of this technology so far has been limited to pocket based
inhalation devices. The technology appears very attractive for the generation of nanoparticles in general and specifically for the laboratory synthesis of drug nanoparticles for various inhalation or injection based applications. This project envisages the development and scale-up of an atomization device based on the above principle. This device will be integrated with an existing aerosol reactor system for generation of dry nanoparticles of various drug materials.

The initial part of the work involves experiments towards development of a droplet atomization device based on amplifying transducer induced vibrations imparted to a liquid droplet. Subsequent experimental work involves characterization of the droplets produced and integrating the system with an aerosol reactor. The study will also involve setting up of computations involving Faraday waves, to understand and fine tune the processes.

The candidate should have an aptitude for experimental work involving performing multiple trials, carrying out measurements, designing the prototype units for fabrication. He/She must also have interest in modelling and numerical simulations. Background in fluid mechanics and elementary electronics is desirable.
Junior Research Fellow: (1 Post) Eligibility : M.Tech in Mechanical/Chemical/Electrical or Physics
